Hyundai reveals post-scrappage programme

Tuesday, 26 January 2010
tony_whitehorn_hyundai_250Hyundai has unveiled a three-pronged post-scrappage initiative aimed at maintaining the record sales level it achieved in 2009.

Part-exchange plan
Under the Trade & Upgrade banner Hyundai's UK dealers will continue to offer buyers a £2,000 part-exchange allowance on cars aged between seven and ten years old.

Also, in a move to retain its scrappage customers, Hyundai is launching a Happy Returns package, which offers these customers the chance to swap to a new 10-plate registration in March for £499 for an i10, £599 for an i20 or £749 for an i30. The offer will run until the first anniversary of each car.

Valuable lessons
"We have learnt some valuable lessons from the 33,000 people who have bought cars from us under the scrappage scheme" said Tony Whitehorn, Hyundai's managing director in the UK.

"They love transparent pricing. They hate haggling. And if they see a good deal they will snap it up. What we are offering post-scrappage will build on this experience and will change the way cars are bought in the UK for ever."

Family and friends
The final part of the initative will see all of Hyundai's scrappage customers receive a Friends and Family voucher offering relations and acquaintances £250 off a new Hyundai.

The programme follows hot on the heels of Toyota's Swappage scheme which offers a £2,000 trade-in on new Yaris, Auris and Avensis models, although that scheme only applies to vehicles registered by 31 March.

Hyundai doubled its sales in 2009 to 56,726, a level Whitehorn told Motor Trader he believes can be achieved in 2010. Click here for full interview.
