Arnold Clark was the top performing car retailer in the Sunday Times' Top Track 100. The annual survey rates private UK companies by turnover and Arnold Clark was rated number 12 on a sales of £2.21bn in 2008.
The Scotland-based dealer group has 145 outlets and is still run by its eponymous boss who launched the business in the 1950s after leaving the RAF as a motor mechanics instructor.
The dealer group was placed higher than household names such as Iceland (£2.08bn), EMI (£1.45bn) and BMI (£1.04bn).
Marshall Group Cambridgeshire-based Marshall Group was rated 69 on turnover of £724m. The business, which operates 40 dealerships along with its aerospace activities, celebrates its centenary this year. The group is owned by the Michael Marshall, the grandson of the founder.
Greenhous Group The Shewsbury-based Greenhous Group was rated 72 on turnover of £690m. The group operates 10 dealerships and is one of the biggest Vauxhall sellers in the UK. Joint chief excutives Derek Passant and Kerry Finnon have led the business since a managment buyout in 2004. The company was founded in 1912.
Listers Listers was rated 83 on sales of £622m. The Stratford-upon-Avon group runs 39 dealerships and is owned by its founders chairman Keith Bradshaw and managign director Terry Lister.
JCT 600 The Badford-based JCT 600 was the final dealer group in the survey taking the number 96 slot based on sales of £574m.
The group runs 42 dealerships across northern England and is owned by chairman Jack Tordoff, the grandson of the founder.
The UK's biggest private company was judged to be Ineos Group, the chemicals manufacturer, which achieved sales of £23.14bn in 2008.
