James Muir, who helped relaunch Mazda in the UK and has run the brand's European operations since 2005, has been appointed as the new chairman of Seat. British-born Muir cut his automotive teeth in the planning department of Ford. From 1994 to mid-2001 he held a number of management positions with Ford rising to head of marketing services. Afterwards he joined Mazda Europe as project director before heading up Mazda UK after the factory took over distribution from MCL in 2001. He became vice president of sales of Mazda Europe in 2003, before being appointed president and CEO of Mazda Europe two years later. He will take up the Seat job on 1 September when he succeeds Erich Schmitt who will assume new responsibilities within the VW Group.
