The Vauxhall Insignia has beaten Ford's latest Fiesta by just one point in the race for the European Car of the Year 2009 honours.
Judges gave Vauxhall's Vectra replacement 321 points to the Fiesta's 320. Bill Parfitt, chairman and managing director of Vauxhall, said: "This is great news for Vauxhall and its employees, suppliers and retailers. Vauxhall has made great strides in recent years and the Insignia illustrates what we're capable of achieving." Vauxhall has won the honour just twice before, once in 1985 with its Astra and two years later for the Omega. In 2007 the Vauxhall Corsa lost to the Ford S-Max by just two points. This year, 37 cars were put forward for COTY, with seven making the shortlist. Each contestant must be on sale in at least five different European countries.
