HYUNDAI Car (UK) has been hauled over the coals by the Advertising Standards Authority for the second time in three months, this time for its controversial advert comparing Rover's cars to kettles.
The ad, which ran in April and May, mentioned Hyundai's three year unlimited mileage warranty and also Rover's one year warranty, pointing out that a certain make of kettle came with two years cover.
The ASA judged that the ad, part of Lex's deliberately provocative campaign to promote the brand image of its new acquisition, went on to make an implied and unfair criticism of the Rover workforce."Every Hyundai is built by a remarkably hard working and intelligent workforce. Robots. They don't keep stopping for tea breaks and they're not continually asking for pay rises."
Hyundai was told to "avoid such a denigratory approach in future."
A south London firm, AS Radar was also censured by the ASA for advertising a œ129 radar detector which gave "a warning of motorway speed cameras", when the product's claimed effectiveness couldn't be proved. The ASA also said that the ad failed to make it clear that using the detector in the prescribed way was illegal.
