Government fails to publicise new scarpping rules

The government has been accused of failing to inform the public about new plans to scrap and recycle old vehicles.

From 1 January, under the EU's new End-of-Life Directive, old cars can be returned to manufacturers or to an authorised scrapyard for recycling. The directive requires manufacturers to offer a free takeback service. Liberal democrat MEP Chris Davies warned that while manufacturers had been working hard to meet their obligations, the government had failed to adequately inform the public of their responsibility. Davies argued bodies such as the DVLA and VOSA could also target the public and raise awareness.
