Consumers drive up spending on new cars

The amount spent by UK residents buying a new car has increased by 61 per cent over the past ten years, according to new research.

A study by Halifax revealed that over the same period, however, the price of a new car has gone down by 6 per cent with consumers getting more car for their money. The study also showed that UK residents spent over £36bn on purchasing cars last year - approximately 4.5 per cent of total disposable income and nearly £1,500 per household. Nearly one in ten motorists purchased a brand new vehicle and one in four purchased a used car.
