Vehicle emissions remain stable

Figures from the Department for Transport have shown that while the UK's total car parc has grown over the last decade, carbon emission rates have remained stable.

In 1993, there were 24 million cars on the road, emitting just under 20 million tonnes of carbon. By 2003, the car parc had risen to 30 million, but emission levels were the same, according to DfT statistics. Other figures showed that the percentage of vehicles emitting more than 166g/km of carbon dioxide had come down from 77 per cent in 1997 to around 41 per cent in just eight years.
