A Yorkshire farmer has succeeded where famed explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes failed – by becoming the first person to cross the Bering Strait in a land vehicle.
Steve Burgess, 52, endured temperatures of - 46°C to float across the icy stretch from Russia to Alaska in his Land Rover Defender, which was fitted with a propeller and motor. The crossing was the culmination of a trip that began 10,379 miles away at Burgess’ farm near Huddersfield in West Yorkshire.
Previous attempts by Sir Ranulph Fiennes and explorers Steve Brooks and Graham Stratford to cross the 56-mile Bering Strait ended in failure after damage to their Snowbird 5 vehicle.
The expedition was sponsored by the Cooper Tire and Rubber Company Europe, who provided Discoverer STT tyres for the Land Rover’s land journeys.
