Ford posts record $8.7bn losses
US carmaker takes hit in second quarter of trading

Ford has posted a massive $8.7bn (£4.37bn) second quarter loss in its American heartland.

A mix of spiralling fuel prices and a model range heavily dependent on thirsty pick-ups and SUVs are being seen as drivers behind the latest financial bad news.

It is now likely to cut light truck production and convert factories to making smaller cars.

Ford also plans to sell the latest Fiesta and forthcoming Ka replacement –based on the Fiat 500- in America.

Like its rival GM, Ford has been hit by an ill-judged model mix, falling sales and massive overheads caused by generous staff welfare payments.

Its latest woes come as the company celebrated the Model T’s hundredth birthday.

Brian McLean says:
You have to try hard to loose $8.7bn ! Ford generally have a well designed, innovative, and well engineered product offering, world wide. The problem seems to be the Ford Management. For some time now they seem to have an uncanny knack of getting the wrong products into the wrong markets at the wrong time ! I now wonder whether Ford has enough cash & time left to get it right.

The brand has no appeal. Who would want to drive a car with a boring blue badge when you could have an Audi, BMW, Merc or Lexus for similar value but better build qualty and better image.

Most ford models seem to suffer from "tin worm" They just bubble & rust away far sooner than any other make. I would choose a Fiat, Peugeot or Citroen any day.
