Lancia has unveiled the Delta, its first all-new model in five years, as it bids to relaunch Fiat’s premium brand outside Italy.
The new model is not due to hit UK showrooms until mid-2009, when it will be available through select Alfa Romeo dealers. The Lancia Delta on show in Geneva Originally set for summer 2008, the UK launch was postponed due to Fiat’s struggle to put a sufficient dealer network in place.
The success of the new 500 has meant Fiat dealers have been reluctant to go through the process of refurbishing their showrooms in order to accept another brand.
The Delta, which has been described as a hybrid between a sports car, saloon and estate, will compete with midsized models such as the Audi A3, as well as larger models such as Ford’s Mondeo.
Not counting the UK, Fiat said it expects to sell 60,000 Deltas in western Europe.
