General Motors pays up to $200m to end American Axle row
Carmaker hopes latest development will end strike

General Motors has agreed to pay $200m (£102m) to aid employee buyouts at American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings in the hope of settling the ongoing strike at the parts supplier.

The strike, which began in February, has hit production at 30 GM plants, as American Axle is one of the carmaker's main suppliers.

GM said in a government filing that the $200m would go towards temporary payments to buffer reduced wages for the workers and employee buyout and early retirement packages.

While the carmaker was previously hesitant to get involved in the dispute between American Axle and the United Autoworkers union, it has estimated that the strike reduced its liquidity by $2.1bn in the first quarter of this year.

A deal is yet to be struck between the two sides and talks are ongoing.
