Alfa Romeo to relaunch in the US?
Fiat in talks to take its luxury brand back to America

Fiat has started talks with carmakers in Detroit about the possibility of producing Alfa Romeos in the US in either 2011 or 2012, according to the Financial Times.

The Italian group also plans to relaunch its Iveco trucks in the States, as well as the new Fiat 500.

Despite rumours that production would be set up in Mexico, Fiat chief executive Sergio Marchionne has confirmed it will take place in North America.

Weak US dollar

The US dollar’s weakness against the Euro was the manufacturer’s primary reasoning behind the decision.

Marchionne said no company in Europe wanting to sell States-side could produce goods outside the US and make a profit.

Fiat withdrew Alfa from the States in 1995, a year in which its American sales totalled just 400 units.

Meanwhile, the Italian manufacturer has been hoping Tata’s acquisition of luxury marques Land Rover and Jaguar will help its business.

Fiat collaborates extensively with the Indian carmaker, and has its eye on Jaguar’s rear-wheel drive chassis platforms and Land Rover’s four-wheel drive systems for Alfa Romeo’s new flagship model.
