Car Care Plan hits back at Nationwide

CAR Care Plan has hit back at Nationwide Autocentre's claim to have introduced the UK's first MoT guarantee.

Car Care Plan managing director Paul Newton told Motor Trader: “We've been selling the same products for 10 years – MoT insurance and guarantees to franchised and independent dealers.” Newton claimed Car Care Plan covered 100,000 MoT guarantee contracts in 2007 alone. “They are either sold or given away to boost service loyalty,” he said. Newton said the MoT products could either be linked in with warranties or offered separately. He insisted MoT insurance was not a new product but was offered by many competitors in the market. “Similar products have been around for 10 years and are sold by motor traders up and down the country.” But a spokesman for Nationwide said there was no “like-for-like comparison” between Car Care Plan's MoT guarantees and its own, which were “completely standalone” and not linked to any of its other services. Nationwide Autocentre last month claimed to have launched the UK's first MoT guarantee to mark the end of the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the test by the Ministry of Transport in 1967. Nationwide's guarantee covers repairs, parts and labour up to a cost of £650 and is available across its 200-strong network for an additional £49 premium. The guarantee, which is transferable should a car be sold during the cover period, must be taken out at least 90 days before the MoT is due. Chief executive Duncan Wilkes said: “We have found £650 covers the majority of things that can fail a car.” Meanwhile Car Care Plan claimed to have sold more than 1 million motor warranty and insurance policies for the first time last year following a 10 per cent increase in business on 2006. “It took us well over 10 years to sell our first million products after being founded in 1976,” said Newton, “and now we have achieved that figure in one year alone.” Newton said the company added paintwork and upholstery protection as well as PPI to its portfolio in 2007.
