Toyota launches iQ city car
Wraps come off at Geneva Motor Show

Toyota unveiled two all-new cars in Geneva with the formal launch of its iQ city model and the Urban Cruiser mini-SUV.

The launches are part of an 18 model rollout planned for the Toyota and Lexus brands in 2009.

The iQ, which was shown as a concept at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show, is just 3m long and provides a 3+1 seating configuration.

Spring 2009 launch

The car goes on sale in the UK in spring 2009 and will be available with a choice of two petrol engines and one diesel. The manufacturer confirmed that emissions will start at around 100g/km.

The Urban Cruiser will sit below the Rav 4 in the line-up and will effectively replace the discontinued three-door Rav 4.

The car will be a fully fledged 4X4 five-door and reaches UK dealers in the first half of next year.

Speaking at the show Miguel Fonseca, Toyota's UK managing director, described next year's launch activity as an “unprecedented move” for the brands.

However, he wouldn't be drawn on when a replacement for the Avensis would be launched, but said sales of the existing model were holding up well, assisted by a simplified range and the 2007 launch of higher specified TR versions.

He also hinted that the petrol/electric Prius hybrid was now making money for the company and that for UK dealers it now offered the best margins.

How can Fonseca state the Prius is making the dealers money when they ended up eating into their standards margin to the tune of £200.00 on each unit sold. Next time one of these spinners make a statement please make them back it up with fact.
