Consolidation continues to be rife in the body repair sector, according to the findings of this year's Motor Trader Top 100 Independent Bodyshops survey, sponsored by 3MAutomotive Aftermarket.

The gap between the biggest repairers and their smaller competitors continues to grow with Nationwide Crash Repair Centres dominating the top position with a turnover of £163m from 70 sites.

Its nearest rival is Just Car Clinics with a turnover of £36.9m across 20 sites.

Fleet focus

The entry point into the top 10 now stands at £13.4m, compared with £8.9m last year. While the entry point into the top 100 has risen from £1.48m to £1.9m.

This year's survey shows that bodyshops are increasingly dependent on insurance and fleet contracts with less emphasis on retail and trade work.

Companies in the Motor Trader Top 100 Independent Bodyshop survey completed 796,800 jobs per annum, which averaged 48 jobs per week for each site.

Based on the submitted and estimated turnover figures this places the average job value at £924, excluding VAT, which report author Trend Tracker said reflected the bias towards bigger insurance repairs.
