Citroen pokes fun at Germanic rivals in cheeky new C5 advert
Carmaker claims new saloon has Teutonic properties but French flair

Citroen has embarked upon a cheeky new ad campaign that pokes fun at its German rivals.

The French carmaker has adopted a new advertising strategy for the new C5 that sees it present the saloon as “unmistakably German…made in France”.

Citroen said it aims to market the C5 as reliable like the German brands but with the fun element of the French.

The audacious 60-second advert, which is packed full of German stereotypes, hits TV screens from April 2.

Derek, the translation was not for your benefit - it would be rude to continue this debate in German, excluding other people to comment on your declared extensive knowledge on all things German!!!

Tongue-in-cheek? Ever been at the receiving end of this kind of stereotyping? I thought this was a thing of the past in the PC culture. I am disgusted this ad made it onto the air and hope sincerely the ASA will take it off asap before it damages the German image further. If the ad would give and ethnic minority the same treatment it would be a different story - it is equally unacceptable to air an ad that evokes Nazi imagery. Advertising scraping the bottom of the barrell!

Babs has a soul-mate in Ron. They must be the only two people who find the advert distasteful. Punkt und Schluß.

This advert is horrible. The blond actor looks like the twin brother of Reinhard Heydrich, right down to the fencing. Blond, blue eyed ayran, so beloved of the creatures that inhabited Prinz Albrecht Str 8 Berlin N4 The bar person looks like a member of the B.D.M.

Hey Derek, I am German! I think I should know how I feel about this kind of antiquated and dangerous stereotyping, n'est pas?

Probably one of the best adverts out at the moment, and one to rival the beer ads. With most UK buyers looking at German marques for quality before considering others, this is a smart move on Citroen's part to prove they too can cut the mustard. On another note it's sad to hear that It is unfortunate that some (including ten UK MPs) do not get the tongue-in-cheek humour and have jumped on the politically correct (PC) band-wagon.

Quatsch, Babs, Quatsch! Und ich brauche keine Uebersetzung. This is a fabulous advert and is not at all in bad taste. I would still like to know which Bavarian town appears in the film. I would guess Mittenwald or, perhaps, Oberammergau? If anyone knows, I'd be pleased to hear.

Babs is talking absolute rubbish. Take it from someone who nows Germans very well. They'd be the first to accept this as a great bit of fun

Babs says:
If your friends would spend some time living outside German borders, their view would surely change! The German character is always under fire and there is no need to undermine it further - not least for cheap promotional exploitation. Its just that when you live, as a German in Germany you do not feel the threat.

Grüß Dich, Babs. Vielleicht kommst Du aus der falschen Gegend Deutschlands? Meine Freunde in Niedersachsen und Baden-Württemberg haben nichts schlimmes darin gefunden
