Porsche to challenge new C-charge
Tuesday, 19 February 2008
Porsche has said it plans to challenge Ken Livingstone's increase of the London congestion charge to £25 per day for “gas guzzling” vehicles.

The luxury carmaker has said the new charge is disproportionate, and intends to request a judicial review into the changes, applying to the courts for an order getting rid of the new charge if it does not receive a satisfactory response.

While Transport for London has said the high fee will deter 22,000 cars coming into the zone in October, when it is due to come into practice, Porsche has argued it will not decrease emissions in central London. Porsche models that will be affected by the new charge include the Cayenne and the 911 model, with price tags of up to £50,000 and £80,000, respectively.

Not friends with Porsche

International environmental organisation Friends of the Earth has issued a response to the luxury carmaker's outcry. Director Tony Juniper said: “Cutting carbon dioxide emissions is now an urgent priority and all sectors of the economy and will need to play a part in that process. “Porsche has founded its business on the promotion and supply of highly polluting vehicles. “Instead of spending time and energy battling these popular initiatives, such as the congestion charge, it would be more appropriate for Porsche to put its effort into making a new generation of much less polluting vehicles.”
