Doubt has been cast over General Motor's position as the world's largest selling carmaker. While GM reported a narrow majority of 3,000 units over nearest rival Toyota, Automotive News said GM should not have included sales from subsidiaries in which it holds a minority stake. ![]() GM owns about one third of the SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co, and included sales from this arm, despite Shanghai Automotive Corp's majority stake in the business. Subsidiary salesThis subsidiary accounts for more than 516,000 vehicles, and Automotive News' exclusion of these units places Toyota in poll position.
While Toyota included in its annual figures sales from subsidiaries Daihatsu and truck maker Hino Motors, the Japanese manufacturer holds 51 per cent of each company.
In terms of production in 2007, Toyota overtook the American giant, with a reported total of 9.498m vehicles, up 5.3 per cent from the previous year.
GM said it produced 9.284m vehicles worldwide during the same period.

If those cars sold h... If those cars sold had a GM nameplate or logo, than they should count. |

The cars manufacture... The cars manufactured by Wuling automotive company are mainstream GM models which are developed and produced across the world by myriad GM brands. While someone like Ford may not include the sales of Mazda in which it holds a one-third stake , Mazda is more independent in terms of development and distribution from it's parent company and is a public limited company unlike Wuling automotive.hence one should credit the sales to GM itself and not Shanghai automotive co. |
