The new car received almost twice as many votes as the VW Scirocco, which came in second place.

What Car? said the result boded well for the Verve when it is launched in the UK later this year.

Collecting the award Mark Ovenden, marketing director, Ford of Britain, said: “It's great to get this award – but especially now as we look forward to seeing our exciting new small cars later this year.

“Recognition for the Ford Verve Concept by real customers and enthusiasts suggests we're in for an exciting year."

The Verve was first unveiled at the Frankfurt motor Show last year.
