Tesco to supply cars from today
Retailing giant signs multi-million pound deal with Motorpoint

Tesco has revived its interest in the automotive market after agreeing a multi-million pound car supply deal with one of the UK's largest car supermarkets.

From today Tesco Clubcard customers can exchange vouchers for a new or used car supplied by Motorpoint, the second largest car supermarket in the country.

As an added incentive, the Clubcard vouchers are worth four times their face value when put towards a car acquisition.

Deal worth millions

Tesco said the agreement would potentially be worth millions of pounds to Motorpoint.

The retailing giant claimed its most recent Clubcard voucher mail out was its biggest yet in November at £102m, which would translate as £408m in vehicle equity under the terms of the scheme.

“Currently, over one million customers regularly use their Clubcard vouchers for one of the 300 plus deals on offer,” said Steve McArdle, director of Tesco Freetime, which runs the Clubcard scheme.

“The introduction of Motorpoint to our deals scheme now gives our high points earners the chance to save a considerable amount on one of their biggest purchases.”

"Natural fit"

Motorpoint described the supply agreement as a “natural fit” and claimed it would offer customers “unbeatable prices”.

The Tesco deal could potentially make the company the largest independent car dealer in the country.

It already has an annual turnover of almost £250m – just £30m behind the country's largest independent Car Giant – and generates annual car sales of 25,000 units.

Meanwhile, the Motorpoint contract is not the first time Tesco has chosen to supply cars to its customers.

In 1998 the supermarket chain caused panic in the automotive retailing sector which feared the retailer was muscling into the market following a one month prize giveaway of Skoda Octavias before Christmas and that was followed by an abortive attempt to sell scooters in the summer of the following year.

My business is next door to tesco's so I will look forward to selling to all those disatisfied customers that can't get all their car problems sorted at their checkouts.I seem to remember some people who sold Daewoo's thinking they could set the world on fire along with someone called Branson who also failed miserably.

The root of the problem is a bit closer to home......as a trade, how do we allow 'our' cars to leak into Motorpoint in the first place!!!

This is nonsense, I think you're trying to frighten us into thinking Tesco's going to sell cars next door. The deal allows Tesco customers to get a discount on Motorpoint's cars by trading in their Tesco Clubcard vouchers for 4 times the value. A customer would have to spend £250,000 at Tesco to get £2,500 in clubcard vouchers (1 point per £1 spent, each point worth 1p), which you can then quadruple in Deal tokens to get £10,000 for your car at Motorpoint. I'd suggest the average Tesco customer could probably get a few hundred quid off at most. This deal does not "potentially make Tesco the largest car dealer in the country"!

Not Again, Great. Take customers money then dump them on the local dealer, no front end sevice, no back up service and customers left without a hope. Tescos should be ashamed

Did someone mention beans ? In the 80's Asda started selling Fiat cars , it didn't last long and the final comment from their top man "there is more money in selling baked beans and you don't need any expertise".

It is interesting how every few years big companies suddenly get the feeling that that have redeveloped the midas touch. So lets get into selling cars because it is just so easy, is the cry.Two years later and lots of money lost, once again they realize that it is a hell of a lot more complicated and hazardous to there financial health. How long this time?

I Think Tesco's should keep selling beans and leave cars to the Dealers if we let them get away with this ? maybe we have change the name of England to Tescoland
