Fiat's new version of the Cinquecento has been named Car of the Year by European motoring journalists.

The 500 city car beat the Mazda 2 and Ford Mondeo into second and third place, respectively.

The winner
The last time Fiat won this award was with its Panda city car in 2004, but that was by a very small margin of just one point. This year the 500 beat more than 40 other cars by a considerable margin.

In demand

Fiat was expecting to sell 120,000 of the model a year but had already recorded 100,000 orders for the 500 by the end of October since its launch in July. Of the seven models shortlisted, Peugeot 308 garnered the least votes. The 308 came in behind the Kia Cee'd, the Nissan Qashqai and Daimler's Mercedes C-Class.
