Car industry welcomes training changes

The automotive industry has welcomed government plans to overhaul the UK's student qualifications structure to place more weight on vocational based learning.

While the introduction of diplomas - that could replace A levels - is not scheduled until 2013 at the earliest, diplomas in vocational subjects will be made available at 900 schools and colleges next year.

Diploma: The new proposals would be more vocational focussed
Toyota is one manufacturer that has backed the scheme, describing it as “very positive”.

Toyota backing

Toyota's human resources director Sarah Fisher said: “For our industry the ability to raise awareness and understanding of the automotive sector from an early stage would assist in raising its profile, together with the many and varied opportunities available.” “I think the move towards providing options to students for more vocational training within the school system would be very positive.” Fisher also backed the introduction of the work experience element that is planned as part of the diploma programme. “We would be very interested in taking individuals onto our apprentice scheme who are completing diplomas covering the automotive sector,” said Fisher. “They would join us with not only an understanding of the automotive sector but also with a real interest in developing a career in the industry.”

IMI support

The IMI has also spoken favourably of the diploma scheme, claiming it would provide an opportunity to look at areas where existing qualifications were not meeting the level of skills required. The organisation's Automotive Skills division is responding to the new proposals by launching a new strategy that will dovetail with the government's plans. The Sector Qualifications Strategy aims to improve skill levels and performance and will include a revamp of apprenticeships and the inclusion of sector-specific accredited programmes, such as the Automotive Technician Accreditation.
