The government has denied that it has offered a £100m sweetener to Shanghai Automotive to promote its strategic alliance with MG Rover.
A spokesman for the Department of Trade & Industry said the proposed agreement had the backing of prime minister Tony Blair and trade secretary Patricia Hewitt. But he added: “It would be wholly wrong to suggest that any kind of instruction has been given to embassy officials in Beijing to offer financial support in relation to this joint venture.”
