UK car makers have suspended their practice of exchanging sales forecasts on a quarterly basis because of fears that they could be breaking European Union competition laws designed to restrict the creation of cartels.
The SMMT has called a halt to its three-monthly meetings where manufacturers had provided information on sales to avoid accusations of pricing collusion between companies. The European Competition Commission imposed a regime of self-regulation on the industry last year, which made the exchange of information inappropriate, according to the SMMT.
