Misjudged parking and manoeuvring in increasingly large modern cars has been blamed for a dramatic rise in collisions with 66,000 motorists expected to prang a vehicle when negotiating a parking space this year.
According to accident management company Accident Exchange, drivers are increasingly struggling with the enlarged dimensions of their car when parking in outdated car parks.
The company claims that motorists are suffering more than £90m worth of damage in Britain's car parks every year.
For example it said the new Mercedes R Class is almost 2.2m wide and 5.2m long, while the average dimension of a car parking spot is 2.4m x 4.8m.
“Unfortunately it seems some drivers struggle to judge where their cars start and stop,” said Accident Exchange's CEO Steve Evans.
“Although car park crashes are low speed, the incidents can leave vehicles suffering considerable damage – especially if it involves scraping down the side of another vehicle.”
