eBayMotors claims car dealers with moustaches should reach for their shavers if they want to make sales.

The customer satisfaction survey of 1,400 car buyers found that 92 per cent of respondents would 'dismiss' any car-seller with a moustache and 63 per cent would be put off by gold jewelry. Other elements such as wearing a mobile phone headset were also given the thumbs down. Some 98 per cent of respondents said they made instant judgments about car vendors based on clothes, personal hygiene and even elements like hair colour and the strength of handshakes.

Internet is preferred

Half of eBay's respondents said they preferred bypassing sales staff and using the internet to source vehicles. The company has also carried out so called consumer focus groups and found that badly designed or unimaginative dealer websites could potentially turn off buyers. Other negative areas included following up an internet-advertised car and finding either dealer or call centre staff know nothing about it, difficulty speaking to relevant staff members and unwanted telephone rather than email responses. “Smart dealers will build a relationship with the customer before they contact the dealership,” said eBayMotors trade manager Emma Parfitt.

Is any one really surprised by the findings of the survey conducted by ebay? Once again we have dealership proprietors and principals acting like politicians, in so much as they cannot see the plain facts around them.It must be 20 years ago that the dealership of which I was Sales Manager laid down the following rules.. namely, No Beards, No Moustaches, No Crokett & Tubbs designer shadow., and it worked. Also smart suits at all times including weekends. No dressing down for the benefit of the "shell suit families" It would be nice to read and hear that the retail motor industry has learned from its historical past.. alas it has not with the same mistakes being made in every corner of the dealerships. If I am wrong then how come ebay managed to clock up its millionth sale, or are the retail powers that be ignoring this fact too. Wake up you retailers. The manufacturers really dont care who sells their particular product just providing they move the metal and keep production running.
The retail industry has to move with a better calibre of staff who are properly trained and dedicated, if not dealers will not have a market in the next 15 years.Ask your selves why so many independants have either amalgamated or simply withdrawn from the field.
Is there any one out there who can remember 30 years back. Having watched j*pan destroy the UK motorcycle industry, but then saying that j*panese car imports would never exceed 10 percent of the UK market. I remember that 10 years later it had reached 60 percent.
Just look at it this way ..ask your selves ..what is the difference between your sales staff as individuals and the individual selling his/her car on ebay. Would genuiness have something to do with it. I will leave you to ponder upon that one.
