Franchised dealers most expensive for servicing

Franchised dealers charge up to £200 more for servicing than fast-fit chains.

The franchised sector is 50 per cent more expensive on average than other repair outlets, according to a survey by Motoreasy.com.

The online firm analysed a basket of five vehicles that were repaired at franchised dealers, independent garages, independent specialists and fast-fit centres.

Increased competition

While franchised dealers were the most expensive, Motoreasy.com said there was evidence that the introduction of the block exemption regulations were increasing competition in aftersales and driving prices down.

In 12 per cent of cases independent garages were found to be more expensive than franchised dealers.

Consumer wins

“The decision by fast-fit chains to expand from tyres and exhausts into servicing has really started to shake up the market in terms of pricing,” said David Gerrans, director of Motoreasy.com.

“The winner is the consumer who has unprecedented choice nowadays.”

Astonished that 12% of independants are more expensive than franchise outlets. It is well known but usually ignored by those with an axe to grind, that a franchise dealers costs are heavily influenced by motor manufacturers in regard to equipment, premises and training.Independants have few such impositions. Also plain servicing tends to be the easy part of our work, diagnosis and dealing with the growing complexity of vehicles is much more difficult and often less profitable! Kel Prince-yes you've guessed it,a frnchised dealer!!

The franchised dealer is far better placed to carry out servicing having fully skilled techs with manufacturers technical support. The consumer may have a short term gain but a long term loss if things go wrong-which quick fits offer collections-loan cars-valeting-none. The majority of mechanics are those who cannot meet franchised dealer skills and knowledge
