RMIF urges caution over road pricing

The RMIF has warned the government that it should not rush into implementing a road pricing scheme.

The trade association met with the Department for Transport earlier this week to discuss concerns about the impact that road pricing would have on the retail motor sector. In the short term it has been suggested that a number of different schemes may be implemented by local authorities interested in congestion control but the government is also looking at a nationwide programme. “The logistical implications of enacting a national road pricing scheme need to be fully considered before any action is taken,' said Alec Murray non-executive chairman of the RMIF. “Road pricing may seem like a good idea in theory, but if it were to be rolled out, how would vehicles be tracked?”
