Physical auctions are dealers' preferred method of stock disposal despite the rise of the internet. Physical auctions remain favourite Automotive analysts EurotaxGlass's found that auctions remained popular with dealers because they produced speedy cashflow and were the quickest route to market.
“Nearly all of the top twenty dealer groups operate an auction policy, reinforcing the importance of this method of disposal,” said EurotaxGlass's managing editor Adrian Rushmore.
“Auctions are attractive because cars are sold quickly and sale proceeds are returned to dealers without delay to help with cash flow.”
Despite dealers' preference for physical auctions, the analysts said that some retailers favoured the online route.
Increasing numbers are using eBay, Rushmore Rushmore said the majority of dealers sought underwrites from other dealers and many used the internet to off-load unsold stock.
“Increasing numbers of independent dealers are using eBay,” Rushmore said.
“Wholesale market prices can be bettered if time is spent to present the cars in the best possible light and the dealer can show a good record of previous trading.”
