Paying the price for standards
Monday, 17 July 2006
Curtis Hutchinson We report this week on the National Franchised Dealers Association's claim that some UK dealers are paying over £850,000 to adhere to increasingly stringent manufacturer standards.

This is a ridiculously prohibitive amount which will wipe out hard earned profits and add to the financial woes of many businesses. The time is right for manufacturers to take stock and stop worrying about the shade of carpet tiles, the foliage of showroom rubber plants and size of lettering over the front door and let their retail partners get on with retailing. The renewed focus on manufacturer standards can be traced back to the last block exemption. It is therefore encouraging that the RMIF is already involved in the next round of BER negotiations and will be fighting the corner for UK dealers before the industry is presented with a fait accompli in 2010. The organisation has learnt the lessons of the last block exemption and has started its lobbying process early which will hopefully give the UK a louder voice this time around.
