Motor World hints at further growth

AFTERMARKET RETAILER Motor World is back on the acquisitions trail after snapping up nearly two-dozen outlets from the Les Smith chain last year.

In an interview, managing director John Mousell admitted he was looking at further expansion with the company and that a possible deal was on the cards in 2005. He admitted: “We are very opportunistic when it comes to acquisitions – if we can snap up chains of ten or 12 outlets that are right for us, then we will do so. “Motor World currently has 235 outlets across the UK including the 21 shops we took from the Les Smith chain last year – we were very happy with that deal.” Mousell was confident that there were market opportunities in 2005, predicting that prestige car accessory lines would provide lucrative profit opportunities. He said: “Our strategy is to concentrate on the strength of our margins and sales from car enhancement products such as alloy wheels and audio products. “It is not only the so-called boy racer age groups that are buying this equipment – we are actually seeing new markets emerging with these products.” Mousell also believed that consumable parts, such as lamp bulbs and windscreen wiper blades, were also a strong profit opportunity in the coming year. Mousell was speaking shortly before his company's debut at the Aftermarket Show, which ran alongside the Autosport exhibition at the Birmingham NEC earlier this month. He said: “We have attended events including the Max Power Show in the past. But this will be our first time at this event and we're enthusiastic about the possibilities. “We are more interested in the consumer rather than the trade customer – Autosport and the Aftermarket Show have grown and the two events get a lot of visitors.” Mousell added: “Several of our suppliers are excited about the possibilities – the event gives us all opportunities to meet buyers and customers from several market areas.”
