Residual values of three-year old cars bearing the Y-plate – the last of the old system -- are lower than the 51 plate, the first under the new system.
Research by Glass's guide found that the older registration system was viewed as being less desirable among car buyers and that was now impacting on car values. Chris Smith, Glass's car editor, said: “After an initial period of mistrust and plain confusion, the buying public are able to differentiate between the two plate schemes and there is now demonstrably higher levels of demand for cars with the new-style plate.”
